So far, 2016 has been a cruel, cruel mistress. Laying waste to some much loved house hold names from Bowie to Prince, Victoria Wood and even Kimbo Slice at the age of just 42.
Well it continues. One of America’s iconic cars is no more as Dodge have announced they will no longer produce the Viper. Technically it will live to see out the year as the last Viper is actually the 2017 model, but it will bring an impressive 25 year run to an end.
For many the Viper is a thing of beauty and blends the lines between muscle and supercar, a debate that has raged ferociously throughout the years in terms of which it actually is.
At Walton Bridge Garage we don’t want to sit on the fence, but we think the Viper is the perfect love child of the two. It comes from outstanding muscle car pedigree but with the sleek design and beauty you would associate with the latest supercar.
Not only that but the Viper design is one that has transcended the years remaining in touch with the modern day, whilst maintaining the undisputable Viper charm. It is one of those massively underrated cars that people fail to recognise when debating the best cars on the road, but when you see one in the flesh you can’t help but stop, stare and listen.
In the same way that many dusted off their Prince album on hearing of his death, having left it on the shelf for a few years, the departure of the Viper from this world should hopefully spark a suitable memorial.
But as we said it’s not over yet. The final model will come in five, yes five, special editions.
The 1:28 Edition ACR, GTS-R Commemorative Edition ACR, VoooDoo II Edition ACR, Snakeskin Edition GTC, and Dodge Dealer Edition ACR.
Each of the 2017 models are equipped with the iconic all-aluminum 8.4 liter V10, pumping out 645hp and the most torque of any ‘naturally aspirated’ sports car engine in the world.
There is also something in there for every Viper with each special edition representing a model from years gone by. If you want the classic Viper look then the GTS-R is probably the way forward. The classic blue on white with full racing stripes makes it a real eye-catcher in the subtlest of Viper ways.
That said we rather like the slightly more bolshie Snakeskin green!
But fear not, if you feel the need to take out a loan and scramble for your piece of motoring history, but don’t like any of the above, Dodge is still offering its “1 of 1” customization program during the final year of production.
Now time for a minutes silence….
