Spring is most certainly in the air and for many the smell of freshly cut grass will start to evoke feelings of excitement, brought on only by the imminent arrival of the summer and hopefully some sunshine.
As the days grow longer it gives us all the opportunity to get out and about and partake in our favourite hobbies, whether that be walking, cycling, rowing, or as it is for many, driving. Unfortunately for the average Joe, the sight of their battered Peugeot 306 glinting in the sun is nothing to write home about.
In our last Walton Bridge Garage blog post, we outlined some of the best ways to spend a bank holiday weekend, however track days and driving experiences can be expensive and even unaffordable for many.
But fear not there are other ways to enjoy the sights and sounds of rumbling engines and squealing tyres that won’t break the bank.
The Cranleigh Classic Car Show will be held on the 16th August at the Cranleigh Showground. The show offers around 1,700 classic cars of all varieties as well as plenty of stands offering food, drink and live music.
But if static cars won’t quite satisfy the urge for something engine based, one alternative in the Cranleigh area is the Dunsfold Wings and Wheels festival. Held across two days on the 29th and 30th August, it is one of the more firmly established events and a popular family day out. The mix of dynamic aviation and motoring based displays, iconic cars, shops, stands and arena attractions draw some 40,000 people to the event.
But if its competition you want to see, there are a number of events pitting motoring enthusiasts against each other, either head to head or via time trial style events. The Brighton Speed Trial is one of the long standing car events that pits entrants against each other under official race regulations.
More locally Brooklands host an array of events throughout the year, one such being the uphill sprint test on their hill test course. A format that has become increasingly popular as a number of hill climbs have started to spring up around the Surrey countryside. The Kop Hill Climb is one such event already well established having been up and running for around six years.
However our top tip for an affordable, family fun day out this year is the Shere Hill Climb. Still in its infancy and running for its third year, the Shere Hill Climbhas been going from strength to strength since its inception in 2013.
This year’s event takes place on the 6th September on Staple Lane, in the Surrey Hills near Guildford. The track ascends some 300 feet over a distance of just under a mile and the array of challenging corners make it a test for even the better drivers. This mix provides a great spectacle of motor sporting entertainment and at a very affordable price.
All proceeds go to charitable courses in and around Surrey, so what better way to support your local community and see some great automotive eye candy at the same time. Building on the previous two events, improvements have been made to provide clearer viewing areas for spectators, as well as increasing the size of the course, the paddock and showground area.
At £10 a person and free for children under 10, the Shere Hill Climb is cheaper than most. It also places an emphasis on its family friendly atmosphere and goes above and beyond to offer something for everyone to enjoy on the day.
