Is This The Coolest London Black Cab In Existence?

Whether you like them or loath them the Black Cab is an iconic vehicle that embodies the image of the capital on four wheels. However their high fees and the advent of Uber have led to them becoming more of a tourist attraction, rather than a realistic method of traversing the London landscape. But now Land Rover have created an alternative Black Cab capable of defending the London cabbie against any Uber altercations.

Yes, it’s a Land Rover Defender Black Cab and no it hasn’t been designed for the impending cabbie war, but as a celebration of the 67th year of Defender production and its final phase of production at that. It was designed to be part of a nostalgic film celebrating the life of the Defender and will be auctioned at Bonhams on the 16th of December, fit with amber taxi light and all.

Ok there hasn’t been a great deal of design input, just the paint job and additional taxi add ons, but it’s still pretty cool and, it certainly makes a change from the usual minivans and executive saloons that the modern day cabbie has opted for.

It comes equipped with a sat-nav that means taking ‘the knowledge’ is no longer required, although anyone that’s tried to use any type of satellite navigation in the city will know, it’s a complete waste of time anyway. Due to its size it might be more worthwhile taking the London bus drivers test over the knowledge anyway as the Defender is quite a lump. Although this said it’s guaranteed to win any contest when it comes to road rage and other motorists are more likely to move for you, than into you.

What’s more with a turning circle of around 40 feet, it’s not exactly nimble when it comes to dealing with London’s congested roads, although it could mount the pavement with ease. Land Rover didn’t quite think it through when they chose the model of Defender to use either. Having the choice of three wheel base lengths and nine body styles, they’ve opted for the model with the shortest wheel base and no back doors. A tad awkward when it comes to bundling passengers into the back.

So it’s not practical but at Walton Bridge Garage we’re definitely fans.
