The world’s biggest car maker Toyota is having to recall 1.9 million of the world first mass produced hybrid car the Prius, due to a software issue that has been caused over 400 vehicles to slow down suddenly.

This recall affects Prius models produced after March 2009, and is the latest of many recalls issued by the Japanese car giant over the last few years.

Even with no accidents or injuries caused by the defect so far and the halted sale of some car models in America due to issues with heated seats, Toyota is forecasting record profit figures this year mainly due to the effects of the currently weak Japanese currency. This means they can sell their cars for less abroad.

The fault causes warning lamps to illuminate and the vehicle will enter a fail-safe mode where the power is dramatically reduced.

There are currently 31,000 UK registered vehicles in the recall, speak to your local Toyota dealer to check if your Prius requires the new software update.
